Artist Statement

My work explores the world around me, my relationship to my body and nature. I am interested in the dialogue of beauty and repulsion. I am trying to make beautiful what can scare or repulse me. I am also interested in repetition and what happens when something is multiplied beyond what is comfortable. I use a variety of materials, primarily from craft / scrap / hardware stores, both found and altered objects, and experiment with different techniques of materials. Each individual piece has its own story, while still belonging to the same body of work. The use of only black, white, and neutral colors allows for the objects to be seen as they are and focuses the viewer’s attention on the detail or texture of the piece. I play with installation and the interactions between art and viewer, as my work can invade a space usually left open. Through proximity and texture, my work invites touch and brings awareness to the viewer’s space and positioning of their body.

The artist with Untitled (Cluster) at Dzine.

I was born in Longview, TX, grew up in Ohio, and then received my BFA in painting at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. Originally I was an illustration major and then shifted to painting. While I was producing works for my professors, in secret I was constructing things to please myself such as sewing paper.  My mother is a seamstress and I always had a sewing machine. Slowly I started to present my paper works and was encouraged by my professors to follow this direction. I like scrap material of all kinds, craft stores and hardware stores both; embroidery and the toolbox. This combination of the masculine and the feminine in work and craft intrigues me. Currently, I live and work in the San Francisco Bay Area.
